From a barcode to verified product data
Scan the EAN with your phone camera or type it, and Katapic searches the web for that exact code. You see the product it found, with its sources, and you decide: save the data, rewrite the listing with it, or mark it as not your product. The lookup is free.
A barcode says which product it is, not what it is
The EAN on the box identifies the product exactly, but the details buyers and sales channels need still have to be found, checked and typed in by hand.
Typing data from the box
Brand, specifications and dimensions copied by hand, one product at a time.
Look-alike products
A search by product name returns similar models, and a wrong match puts someone else's specifications on your listing.
Wrong or invented codes
A mistyped digit, or a code copied from a web page, gets a product flagged or rejected in Google Shopping.
Look up the exact code, then decide
Katapic searches with the code alone and only counts pages that report it exactly. A model picks one product from those sources without seeing your listing, and shows you what it found.
- ✓Scan with the phone camera, read the code from a photo, or type it
- ✓The GS1 check digit is verified before any search
- ✓A free lookup, with name, brand, data and sources shown before anything is saved
- ✓A warning when the product found does not look like your listing
- ✓Save only the data into empty fields, for free, marked as coming from the web
- ✓Or rewrite the listing with the data found, one credit
- ✓The barcode saved is always the one you scanned or typed, never one found online
- ✓On the Import page, scan the code and then take the photo: the new listing starts with that EAN

How the barcode lookup works
Scan or type the EAN
From the product page, with the phone camera, a photo of the code or the keyboard.
Katapic checks and searches
The check digit is verified, then the web is searched for that exact code.
You see what was found
Name, brand, data and their sources, with a warning if it does not match your listing.
You decide
Save the data, rewrite the listing with it, or mark it as not your product.
Why look up by barcode
Exact identity
Only pages that report your exact code count, so the search does not drift to look-alike models.
Free to look up
The search costs no credits. You pay only if you choose to rewrite the listing.
Your data first
Saved data fills only empty fields, and what you already wrote stays as it is.
Clean identifiers
Invalid and duplicate barcodes are among the 42 checks, and a new code that fails the check digit is not accepted.
What to know about barcodes in a catalog
GTIN, EAN and UPC are one family of codes
EAN-13, UPC-A and the other GTIN formats are issued through GS1 to brand owners. Every GTIN ends with a check digit computed from the other digits, so most typing errors are caught before the code is used.
Why the code never comes from the web
Google Shopping uses the GTIN to recognise a product. A code copied from a web page can belong to another size, colour or market. Katapic uses the web to find data about the code you scanned, and never writes a code it found online into your listing.
Products without a barcode
Handmade items, a brand without GS1 codes or used goods often have no GTIN. The right move is to declare it rather than invent one: Katapic proposes this as a free fix, so the product feed states that no identifier exists.
A product without a barcode is not an error. An invented barcode is.
Barcode lookup FAQ
Does the barcode lookup cost credits?+
No. The search is free, up to 30 lookups a day per workspace. You pay only if you choose to rewrite the listing with the data found, one credit.
What if the product found is not mine?+
Choose "Not my product" and nothing is saved. Before you decide, Katapic also warns you when the product it found does not look like your listing.
Can I scan without a phone camera?+
Yes. Without a camera, or if you do not allow access to it, you can read the code from a photo or type it.
What happens to the data I save?+
It fills only the fields that are empty, and the product's log marks it as coming from the web. Nothing you already wrote is replaced.
Can I start a new product from a barcode?+
Yes, on the Import page: scan the code, then take a photo of the product. The listing is written from the photo, one credit, and starts with the EAN you scanned.
